Memorial Stones

Memorial stones at Harbour View are available in three materials: Portland, slate and an imported sandstone, which is similar to Purbeck.

Each memorial stone is a wedge shaped tablet that lies flat on the ground. The wedge shape means that the inscription face leans towards the reader and it also helps rain water to naturally spill off. When in close proximity to the grave being visited, the memorials can be seen and read easily but from a greater distance, memorials are largely hidden by the grass and plant growth which prevents the overall beauty of Harbour View being affected.

For a cremated remains grave 12” x 12” memorial tablets are used. For full size graves, there is the option of 18” x 12” in either landscape or portrait shape.

All three materials are available for each size and shape, and all are kept in stock and are readily available. However, there are strict criteria in relation to permitted memorials and therefore orders must be made through our office.

In order to maintain the memorial for the long-term, we recommend that you have a maintenance agreement with us. For a relatively small annual fee, we will professionally clean the memorial and re-set it into the ground once per year (this specifically does not involve re-painting the inscription, which may be needed after some years and which we would report to you when required).

Quarried locally as the name suggests, this material has been used worldwide as a building stone, perhaps most famously at St Paul’s Cathedral. Having a light grey colour and a smooth finish, the face lends itself to a clear and distinct inscription with the contrast of black letters.

Portland Stone - 12’’x 18’’                                                                                  £ 325.00 + VAT
Portland Stone - 12’’x 12’’                                                                                  £ 275.00 + VAT

The most hard-wearing of the materials we use for memorials, slate is dark grey and has a distinct beauty in the material itself. Due to this, the letters of the inscription are cut in a ‘deep V’ and are not then painted, quite unlike most materials used for memorials.

Slate - 12’’x 18’’                                                                                                   £ 525.00 + VAT
Slate - 12’’x 12’’                                                                                                  £ 445.00 + VAT

This material is sandy yellow in colour and has a rough finish, making it quite similar in its qualities to Purbeck stone. Due to it being imported it is the least expensive material, yet the sandstone is quite soft and can tarnish over time.

Sandstone - 12’’x 18’’                                                                                         £ 225.00 + VAT
