Some frequently asked questions explained
Direct cremation, also known as unattended cremation, is a basic cremation service without a funeral ceremony and without any mourners or attendees other than the crematorium staff. The cremation takes place at a time to suit the crematorium.
Following cremation the cremated remains, or ‘ashes’ of the deceased are available to their family or next of kin, who are then free to choose what should happen with them. At Harbour View Crematorium we will be pleased to scatter the cremated remains in our peaceful beautiful surroundings at no extra cost.
There could be many reasons, the strongest being that it was the deceased persons' wish, either agreed beforehand with the family or as specified in their will. If this is the case, there is nothing to prevent family and friends holding a celebratory or remembrance ceremony of their own devising, at a time and place to suit. At Harbour View we can assist with this as well – we have Ceremony Halls and Refreshment Suites with many options to choose from.
Other reasons for such a wish may include a desire to keep costs down, or there may be no surviving friends or family.
The price for unattended cremation varies and we don’t pretend to be the least expensive. However, we are based in the heart of Dorset in a beautiful location and we are long-established Company owned by the same family for 120 years. Local families know us and are familiar with where we are located. We believe we charge a fair price for a simple but good quality service. We give an extremely high priority to our carbon footprint and believe we are the greenest crematorium in the country.

Please note price for a Direct Cremation includes not only our charge for the cremation itself but everything else that is required to facilitate the cremation, such as collection of the deceased person, coffin, etc. Harbour View is not a typical crematorium as it is both funeral home and crematorium and therefore our services are provided in packaged form and are not necessarily available separately. Please see our Price List (in particular, the sample packages) to find a specification of what is included and excluded.
